New Voices: An insight into PNB’s unique choreography program for young women
PNB's New Voices students will be presenting their original work on Wednesday, June 5th in Studio C. New Voices is unique to PNBS; it is a program is solely focused on educating and fostering the next generation of female choreographers. By offering young women the time and space to expand their choreographic knowledge and experience, they gain a valuable and broader view about dance and creative process. This not only applies to their training, but how they engage with the art form on a deeper and more holistic level.

Celebrating Retiring Principal Dancer James Yoichi Moore
Whether it be in the Phelps’ Center dressing room, emphatically discussing fantasy football picks, or on McCaw Hall’s stage, charming the audience as one of the sailors in Jerome Robbins’ Fancy Free, James’ enthusiasm is infectious and his presence irreplaceable. As a San Francisco native looking north, never in a million years did he expect to end up at PNB: “It was a very tall company at the time [I was hired]—long legs, slender bodies—there was a look. That wasn’t me.” However, over his twenty-year tenure with PNB, James has set himself apart as one who defines what the company is today, and for years to come. Learn more about James and his career at PNB in this blog.
Executive Director’s Notes: Coppélia
Welcome to Coppélia, PNB’s final repertory program of the 2023/24 season. It’s been several years since we last presented the luminous, lighthearted world of Coppélia, and it’s a joy to bring this beautiful production back to life. If you joined us for our most recent two programs, you may find it hard to believe that the company of classical dancers onstage before you could possibly be the same group of artists who so totally committed to the contemporary choreography of Crystal Pite, Alejandro Cerrudo, Matthew Neenan, Twyla Tharp, and Jessica Lang in March and April.
Artistic Director’s Notebook: Coppélia
Almost fifty years ago, I attended a New York City Ballet performance of George Balanchine’s Coppélia. Somewhere in the middle of the first act, I decided I wanted to dance. You know the rest of this story. Coppélia is all about the dancing, and the music, and the laughter, colors, costumes, and scenery. It may have the same effect on you as it did on me all those years ago.
