October 2023 Open House Podcast and Transcripts

In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, and in partnership with Casa Latina Seattle, El Centro de La Raza, Joyas Mestizas, KEXP, and Union Cultural Center, in October 2023 PNB hosted Baila Conmigo, a community open house. Held at PNB’s Seattle Center studios, this free, public event featured dance performances by PNB Company dancers and local dance group Joyas Mestizas, a kids’ movement class led by Mestre Silvinho, and a panel discussion moderated by Movimento Afrolatino Seattle founder Monica Rojas, with PNB dancers Sarah-Gabrielle Ryan and Jonathan Batista, El Sonido host DJ Albina Cabrera, and Joyas Mestizas Co-Director Luna Garcia.

We are pleased to offer this panel discussion as a podcast, with transcripts available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. We hope you enjoy listening, reading, and celebrating these local creatives.

Latine Artists at PNB Profiles

In 2023, PNB Company dancer Amanda Morgan created a blog highlighting the many Latine artists at PNB. Amanda said, “As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, I found it important to highlight the many Latine artists that help make Pacific Northwest Ballet what it is. We range from being onstage to working behind the scenes to help the organization run as smoothly as it does. Our stories, our cultures, and our histories are what make us who we are and how we show up to PNB every day.”

Ballet’s Latine Inspirations

Also in 2023, PNB Company dancer Kyle Davis created a series of blog posts featuring some of the incredible Latino and Latina ballet dancers who have, and continue, to deeply impact the ballet industry by breaking barriers, inspiring others through representation, and giving back to their communities. Read through the posts and learn about some of the artists who have gone on to lead from the front of the studio, the many Latine artists who are performing today, and those who are particularly dear to Pacific Northwest Ballet.

In this PNB is Listening (a collaboration between PNB artists and staff to highlight diverse voices in the PNB community), Theater artist and activist Ana María Campoy meets with PNB dancers Amanda Morgan, Clara Ruf Maldonado, and Sarah-Gabrielle Ryan for a rich conversation about their respective Chicana and Latinx heritages, how their identities inform their dancing, and their advice to young dancers today.
