Principal Dancers
Olivier Wevers is from Brussels, Belgium. He received his training at the Karys Dance Center with Nicole Karys, a former dancer with Bejart's Ballet du XXieme Siecle. He was a principal at Royal Winnipeg Ballet, dancing regularly with Evelyn Hart, prior to joining Pacific Northwest Ballet as a Soloist in 1997. He was promoted to Principal in 1998.
At Pacific Northwest Ballet, Mr. Wevers has performed leading roles in George Balanchine's Agon, Ballet Imperial, Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet, Divertimento No. 15, Duo Concertant, The Four Temperaments, La Sonnambula, La Valse, A Midsummer Night's Dream (Divertissement pas de deux, Lysander), Rubies, Serenade, Stars and Stripes, Symphony in C, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Theme and Variations, and Who Cares?; Todd Bolender's Souvenirs; Auguste Bournonville's Flower Festival Pas de Deux; Val Caniparoli's Lambarena; Merce Cunningham's Inlets 2; Ulysses Dove's Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven and Red Angels; Nacho Duato's Jardí Tancat and Rassemblement; Eliot Feld's Intermezzo; William Forsythe's Artifact II and In the middle, somewhat elevated; Ronald Hynd's The Merry Widow (Count Danilo) and The Sleeping Beauty (Prince Désiré, Carabosse); José Limón's The Moor's Pavane; Peter Martins' Fearful Symmetries; Mark Morris's Pacific; Vicente Nebrada's Lento a Tempo e Appassionato; Marius Petipa's Don Quixote, Esmeralda Pas de Deux (staged for PNB by Mr. Wevers and Kaori Nakamura), and Paquita; Jerome Robbins' In the Night; Kent Stowell's Carmen, Carmina Burana, Cinderella (Prince), Coppélia (Franz), Firebird, Kammergarten Tänze, Nutcracker (Prince, Drosselmeier), Orpheus Portrait, Palacios Dances, Pas de Deux Campagnolo, Quaternary, Swan Lake (Prince Siegfried, Von Rothbart), and The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet; Richard Tanner's Ancient Airs and Dances; Lynne Taylor-Corbett's The Ballet of You and Me; Paul Taylor's Roses; Twyla Tharp's Nine Sinatra Songs; Rudi Van Dantzig's Ginastera; Han Van Manen's Five Tangos; and Christopher Wheeldon's Polyphonia. He originated roles in Stephen Baynes' El Tango, Donald Byrd's Capricious Night and Subtext Rage, Val Caniparoli's Torque, Dominique Dumais' Scripted in the Body, Nicolo Fonte's Almost Tango and Within/Without, Kevin O'Day's [soundaroun(d)dance], Victor Quijada's Suspension of Disbelief, Christopher Stowell's Zaïs, and Kent Stowell's Silver Lining.
Mr. Wevers performed the Divertissement pas de deux in the BBC's 1999 film version of PNB's production of Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream, filmed at Sadler's Wells Theatre, London. He has performed as a guest artist with Ballet Jorgen, Columbia City Ballet, and Reiko Yamamoto Ballet Company (Japan). He has appeared at Le Gala des Étoiles, Dancers for Life, The Millenium Gala (Japan), and the Aoyama Ballet Festival (Japan). In 2001, he toured Asia with Evelyn Hart, performing Van Dantzig's Romeo and Juliet. In 2004, he performed as a guest artist for New York City Ballet's Balanchine Centennial, and in 2005, he performed with Peter Boal and Company. In addition to his performing career, Mr. Wevers is active as a choreographer. Since 1993, he has choreographed works for numerous companies and schools in Canada, Japan, and the United States. He has choreographed for Pacific Northwest Ballet School and participated in PNB's Choreographers' Showcase in 2004 and 2005.
